How it is calculated
When the amount is before tax: tax equals the amount times the rate, and the total is the amount plus the tax. For example, 100,000 at 18% gives 18,000 in tax and a total of 118,000.
When the amount already includes tax: the value excluding tax is the total divided by one plus the rate. For example, 118,000 at 18% is 100,000 plus 18,000 in tax.
